NPO Description:

To eliminate female infanticide, sex determination feticide and other discriminations against the girl child in India by supporting and networking with organizations and indigenous groups.

Why should we win?

Today, the scale of the gender genocide (1.5 to 3 million girls are killed each year) is sadly similar to other genocides and ethnic cleansing that shocked the world into action in the past century, yet this genocide goes widely unnoticed not only in the western developed countries but also within India itself.

The Rhema Project's strategy for sustainability requires us to develop a new model for support. Yes, we support rescue and care of the unwanted girl child. But this is a short-term solution that is essential but not financially sustainable.

Our goal is to help change a cultural mindset from within and not impose our values upon them with the expectation they will conform. Indians must "own" and embrace the solutions. This is the question of the "Why."

Consequently, we believe 75% of our funding will come from within the country. The greatest resources the west will provide is creative thinking and problem solving. However, 25% of the start up and first generation initiatives must be funded by donors outside of India.

The challenge is how do you speak to a culture (west) that perceives itself as having the solutions and holds the belief that they must lead to one of a supportive role. Short-term we need their resources. Long-term reliance on these resources at best creates a dependency upon them and possibly an attitude of entitlement to these resources.
