NPO Description:
For over 20 years, Heroes Camp, Inc. has provided recreational activities, mentoring, nutrition, academic and counseling services to inner-city youth ages 6-18 in the South Bend region each week. Using sports, particularly basketball, we reach out to young men dealing with difficult issues such as poverty, gang pressures, substance abuse and parental abuse/neglect. Through long-term relationship-building, our volunteers and two paid staff work together with youth to develop their minds, souls and bodies. This foundation is critical so that our kids succeed in school and build stable lives. Heroes Camp, Inc., an outstanding organization, was recognized in January 2011 by Governor Mitch Daniels. The organization’s founders, Pat & BJ Magley, were selected for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Chairman’s Award as role models and inspiration to all Indiana citizens.
Why should we win?
Heroes Camp deserves to win the Force for Good contest, and to receive a total overhaul by outstanding local experts, for many reasons.
The first is that, we Love St. Joseph County! We love our hometown and are committed to seeing the next generation equipped with the basic necessities, that each person has a right to, in order to succeed. All the staff and volunteers at Heroes Camp have completely devoted their lives to become real life heroes to each child who enters our doors. We know that fatherlessness has no boundaries including sides of town, race, or age, but we have our eye focused on kids without dads in our own backyard. In order to see our community truly thrive and have lasting success, we must care for children who are slipping through the cracks. They’re our future entrepreneurs, school teachers, civic leader and solid citizens. When we reach home, we help create tomorrow’s heroes.
The second reason that Heroes Camp deserves this impressive award is plain and simple – 100% of every dollar ever donated to Heroes Camp is poured directly back into the fatherless children we serve! At Heroes Camp, there are no overhead expenses and ALL OF OUR SERVICES ARE OFFERED AT NO CHARGE TO THE PRATICIPANTS!! We are serious about providing quality help, mentoring, and safety to children who, without Heroes Camp, would never have a chance in the game of life. None of our programs have ever been fee based. This seems like a mystery right? Well, all of our “marketing” is done totally in house. Our website, newsletters, brochures, social media campaigns ... and wow is it exhausting. It’s especially difficult to reach out and spread the word to new people. Heroes Camp would be SO grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity to have excellent professionals come in and take over and provide brand guidance.
Lastly, Heroes Camp is proven! We have been established for over 22 years with back to back awards from Governor Daniels in 2011. We are famous with all the hurting kids in the region and trusted among the cities officials.
Please help us fulfill our dream of no longer being the best kept secret in Michiana.
